What’s the point?

Someone recently asked me, “So, What is your New Year’s Resolution?” I gave my usual sarcastic bullshit answer…to not make empty promises I can’t keep. (get it?) I decided to do some reading to find out exactly what the history is behind the idea of the resolution. HERE, I found out that New Year’s Eve is actually the oldest celebrated holiday and one of only a few celebrated in every culture on earth, though not always at the same time. Some celebrate using the Solar Calendar, also know as Julius Caesar’s calendar while other cultures celebrate using the Lunar Calendar. Either way, I find it fascinating when an entire planet can celebrate a singular event, in complete unity.

The coming of the New Year celebrates a new beginning, a chance to right your wrongs. Some cultures believe New Year’s Eve a time to repent for your sins and ask your enemies for forgiveness. Whatever tradition says, Americans have come to use this time as a time of introspect. Every year, we give ourselves outrageous unreachable goals destined to fail, then feel horrible about ourselves for failing. Don’t think of this time as a time to change, think of this time as a time of learning. Every day is a gift and should be treasured as so. So, no, I have no New Year’s Resolution, only a wish. A wish of peace, prosperity, and plain old good luck to everyone I know and love. And even to those I don’t know.
